Yes, you are wrong.

It's almost always more cost effective to simply ditch/sell the old card and replace with a brand new card than it is to add a second card running in SLi mode. If you are currently buying an SLi capable mother board, you would probably benefit by ditching it in favor of a non-SLi capable model with the same features since you'll probably never ever use SLi. This switch will only save about $10-45 typically however, so it's not a huge amount either way.
