It is normal to have lots of svchost.exe processes around; they're all doing different things.

It's not normal to have lots of firefoxes around, kill them.

You can change what the button does in the power settings somewhere. By default it does 'hybrid-sleep' which puts the computer into low-power sleep for a little bit, and eventually hibernates the computer (and powers off completely). Personally I think it works well, but for people used to micromanaging their computers you have to get used to it.
