This post is to aid our Guild's gemcutters and people wishing to get gems cut know more about the mechanics of Gem Cutting.
Firstly, look at
this resource guide which outlines the gems.
How Gems are Classified:
Gems are categorized by: colour, level, and cut. There are eight colours of gems (Black, Blue, Green, Orange, Violet, Red, White, and Yellow). Each colour gives a range of effects while level and cut effect the potency of said effect.
How do Gem cutters make a gem?
A Gem Cutter can cut gems to three different shapes:
- Oblique, Carbochon = Armour
- Oval, Teardrop = 2-handed weapons
- Rhombic, Trillion = 1-handed
Only gems with the appropriate shape can fitted into their corresponding weapon/armour. I.e.: an Oval cut gem cannot be put into armour and vice-versa.
The stats the gem gets after being cut is determined solely by the gem's colour. The Gem Cutter has no control of what stats the gem will received though, as gems are assigned stats at random based on the set of stats available for that colour.
For example: A Violet gem that is cut for a Two Handed Weapon as the possibility of either having +Hate or +Taunt stats. Since the stats are assigned at random based on the colour and the shape, there is a 50/50 chance on producing a +Taunt or +Hate gem.
How do I read the spreadsheet posted above?
The spreadsheet is broken down into tables based off of gem colours. Once a colour is selected the three tables are broken into the different shapes that can be cut, which corresponds to the item the gem is made for.
Here is a description of each column:
- Type: Explains the colour and the weapon type of the gem
- Prefix: This is the prefix the gem will have after it is made. The prefix is based off the stat the gem is assigned when it is made.
- Quality: The cut of the gem, either Uncut, Flawless or both. This just tells you how the stat numbers are displayed in the following columns. If the row is marked "Both", the stat numbers will be expressed as [uncut]/[flawless] in the following columns.
- Effect: Lists the possible stats you may receive when the gem is made. Effects are based off colour.
- Gem Names: The following six columns represent the gems for each level. Starting from 40 to 80, Gem levels determine the strength of the Gem Effects when cut. Note that a Gem Cutter must be at the appropriate crafting level to cut higher level gems.
So how do I get a gem cut?
Look at the spreadsheets posted above for a Gem Effect that you want. Once you know the colour associated with the Effects, you can collect them and give them to a Gem Cutter. Note that since the effects are random, you will not always get the gem that you want. So once you have them gem, just give them to one of our gem cutters, tell them the shape you want (Armour, one-handed, or two-handed weapons) and I'm sure they will be happy to make one for you. If you want to be extra nice, you can buy them a gem cutting kit as well or give them the money equivalent to one.
Where do I find gems?
Gems have a chance of dropping off of any humanoid mob of the appropriate level (level 40 gems drop off of level 40-49 mobs, etc).
