Default Battlefield Heroes

NYTimes article covers the next installment of the Battlefield series (PC, not console) and how it will differ from the previous games. EA is really going out on a limb with this one.

I have a strong feeling that this is going to be fucking stupid.

It sounds interesting. I doubt this will occupy any resources dedicated to BF3 however. I am still confident they'll be readying themselves for that instalment. To be honest, I hope this kind of model takes off for them, so they stop skimping on BFx for the hardcore market. The more money they make from the toy games, the hope is that will reduce the noose on the others.

We'll see.

I'm gonna say that this is "BF3". I don't see EA putting out a free Battlefield game and then devoting resources to put out a $50 Battlefield game to compete with it. What would be the purpose to split your fanbase between two games in the same series and who would pay for a game instead of going the free route? The online model makes sense since it will be easier to update and expand because, in the past, the expansion packs for Battlefield games have been a bust. However, I shudder at the part about making the game simpler (dumbing down?) and paying for more accuracy. Sounds like they are taking the skill out of the game.

I do find it interesting they went with the cartoon route a-la TF2.

are they going to expect people to pay for the servers?

The truth is that i dont' care how it looks or if it's pay 4 play or whatever as long as the gameplay is good. i worry that "dumbing" it down will consist of taking out squads and reducing the players per map. Both would be tragic.

Yeah the "reducing the difficulty" rhetoric worries me.

This sounds like Team Fortress 2's art design, playability approach and Gunbound's player customization mashed into a Battlefield frame.

Might be good, although paying for perks is off putting.

i don't know that i agree about the paying for perks thing being bad. it'll depend how they do it, but i wouldn't be surprised if the player's attribute boosts stopped at around 50 or 60 dollars worth of stuff and the rest is just stuff you can wear. but who knows. i think they're trying to lure people into spending 10-15 bucks who might otherwise have tried the demo for a while and then never ended up spending any money.

or they might do it by player class. it might only take 30 bucks to upgrade an assault class all the way, but if you want to upgrade a support one all the way you'd have to pay another 30 bucks.

who knows though. we'll just have to see.

It's in times like this that I'm glad I never get my hopes up.

My real hope is that someone will step up and fill the void where good large-scale squad-based gaming used to be.
