How to record an in game Demo in COD4
I have shot Fraps video while ingame in the past and found that the FPS loss was very difficult to adjust for. So here is a little walkthrough to record an in game Demo and then access it later on. When you tie in COD4Player, you can later add in varying speeds and even alter the camera angles.

Quote:
Q: How do I record a demo of my game?
A: Simply type "/record <filename>" in the console to begin recording, and "/stoprecord" to finish. The lower left corner of the screen will display the size of the file during the recording.
Q: Where can I find my demo files?
A: The demo files will be stored in your "Call Of Duty 4/main/demos" folder
Q: How to I view my demos?
A1: The way it is supposed to work is that you type "/demo <demo-name>" in the console, but this is bugged and does not work (in version 1.4). Instead you can use a third party program to launch the demos, like COD4Player from Cybopat, which also allows you to change playback speed and camera angle. To stop the playback type /disconnect in the console
A2: - Go to "C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\Mods\ModWarfare" and create a folder called "demos". Open that folder and paste "test.dm_1". (your COD4 folder may be located differently)
- Open CoD4 Multiplayer back up, and click the Mods button at the main menu. Select "ModWarfare" and press Launch. Call of Duty should restart, this time with a blueish tint.
- Now, open up the console and type "/demo <demo-name>". Your demo will now be loaded and played back. There are no control functions (pause, rewind, etc.)
- Type /disconnect to close out of your demo.

COD4Player is available from Cybopat at: http://www.cybopat.net/vb_cod4player_eng.php

Here is a test video I recorded this evening. It is of Downpour starting partway through.
http://files.filefront.com/Demo+test.../fileinfo.html
The demo records in game sounds, in game chat and also records when you skip out of views or how you move the camera around as a spectator. It fails to capture cursor movements on airstrikes, in game voip and in game scoreboard (I check to see how many are alive during the round). Compared to running fraps while in game, this taxes my computer far less then Fraps. Tell me what you think.

I also changed the binds for F1 and F2 to start and stop recording demos... they are in the same cfg file as the text binds.
So basically I hit F1 to start a demo named pwn.. I then have a desktop shortcut to COD4 demo( C:? COD4/Mods/ModWarfare/demos) folder.. You may have to create the folder first.
Then I rename the pwn.dm file between rounds/takes .. then I can keep recording.
bind F1 record pwn ... record "demo name" ... quotes wont work in cfg file
bind F2 stoprecord

You need to create the Demo folder if it isn't there. Read that first post again under the bullet points. Then try it again and see if you can make it work. When it records you get a counter that pops up in real small font telling you how much space the file is taking up. That's the only indicator that lets you know it's working beyond the FPS drop.

Use a video capture program to actually capture video and then use a video editor to make the video. A good free Video Capture program is Fraps which can be found at www.fraps.com. For Video Editing, you can use windows Moviemaker which should already be on your computer.
