    Question PS3 vs XBox 360

Well, the time has come where I'm considering buying a console and I thought I'd get some impressions from you guys.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the PS3 for the following reasons:
    • Blu-Ray. One of the main things is that you can also hack the PS3 to be able to rip my Blu-Ray movies to file and play them back from my Apple TV all in one place.
    • True 1080p. Does the XBox360 support 1080p? From what I saw, it's only 1080i. Yes, I know there isn't a lot of 1080p content yet, but there's enough out there for the top games to consider. I have a 1080p TV.
    • Region-free. Games here are $110 and we still have some pretty silly laws for video game censorship due to the lack of a R18+ rating. So, games like GTA4 may end up being censored. Either way, I can save around 40% per game by getting them sent over from the US.

The online component isn't that big for me. I don't really intend to play MP games on the console. I prefer the PC for that.

I don't intend to play a huge range of games, so all the best games will likely be available for both platforms. Game variety isn't that big a deal.

So, can anyone tell me really good reasons why I should consider an XBox 360? Bearing in mind that I'd likely recoup any extra cost for the PS3 with the first few games I can buy overseas.

Honestly I would say other than for a few game titles that probably wouldn't interest you anyways there is no true strength the 360 has over the ps3 except online capabilities. The ps3 is definitely starting to shape up in the game department and has some great looking exclusive titles. I would say the choice is really a no brainer when you factor in paying 110 bucks for a game versus probably 70-90 for a ps3 game (factoring shipping and such around the world to the middle of no where). The ps3 will get most of the great single player titles from the 360 and the differences between ps3 and 360 versions are now starting to tip in the ps3's favor.

I have to disagree with L10N on the grounds that I have a 360 and I have played manyagames on the PS3, and, maybe the graphics may look a little better, but all games that I have played on 360 just seem to have a much, MUCH more fluid control experience. But you also have to take into consideration the fact that the 360 is about a year ahead of the PS3, giving it more experience and making the games work better and look better. Also (and don't quote me on this), I'm not sure if the PS3 has an HDMI out. The new 360s do, and those do put out in 1080p, but the difference isn't that noticeable from Component.

The PS3 does have some good titles, but I like the 360 also because you can have 4 people on the console without having to buy a Multi-tap. Not sure if that's a big issue.

    Counter argument to L10n.

as stated over multipul reviewers, most games that are on both systems look better on xbox. controlers are better for fps games, and while the ps3 is coming along like a quadrapalegic rolling down hill, its got alot of ground to make up on the 360. frankly I wasnt impressed with the ps3 everytime i've played on one. Blu-ray is nice, but i'd rather have it a sepreate unit given game machines due tend to fail sooner due to use.
Since austrailia does have a crap ton of cencorship your screwed on both systems unless you keep importing. Xbox does have its flaws. *cough red ring* but microsoft has stepped up support ten fold.

    so for me its 360>ps3

but im sure you'll get some microsoft hatting mac users telling you some BS at some point. the best way to tell which you should get is get a list of the games out and coming out for both systems and do a check list of the ones you want. but for me, I'm getting a Wii before i'd get a ps3...SMASHBROTHER BRAWL!!! And what you could even do Bom is, instead of paying for the RIDICULOUS shipping overseas from the companies, it may be cheaper to ask a friend in the states to pick up the games for cheaper. That's what I did if there was something in London that I needed. I'd ask a relative to get it and then they'd ship it over.

The wii sucks, simple fact, and I have owned one since release. I own a 360 and love it, and while reviewers have stated that some games are worse on the ps3 I was simply stating that the gap is closing. For instance the gta4 review on ign gave the tip to the ps3. It is far, far more important to look forward than backwards. I would also like to point out to tweedledee and tweedledum that Bom would probably rather cut off his own balls before playing a console shooter. I know a little bit of me dies every time I'm forced to face the ludicrous auto aim in games like halo 3 and vegas 2. I believe when it comes to the quality of solo games the ps3 will have the advantage but as Seancho stated looking at a list of games for both is unnecessary.

The PS3 has HDMI out. It also supports RCA and components out. Also it has digital audio out. If the 360 outputs to 1080p then it is upscaling because no game supports 1080p resolution (to the best of my knowledge).

What new console uses a multi tap? The PS3 can have 8 (or more) controllers on simultaneously (although no game has this capability).

All cross platform games are designed for the 360 and then ported to the PS3, which is why they tend to perform better on the 360. Current games that are actual tuned to the PS3 will perform better then the 360 (like GTA4, which has better graphics on the PS3 and better load times since it can be preloaded to the hard drive).

The only thing the 360 does better than the PS3 is online, but then again you pay for that service separately so it will obviously be better.

PS3 does have HDMI. 360 does support 1080P. The biggest selling point is that the PS3 has blu ray. Supposedly theres gonna be an add on for the 360 but who knows how much its gonna cost. As far as games and online functionality, its 360 hands down. PS3 might get better when Home is release but nobody really knows by how much or when. Hope that helps.

L10N pretty much nailed my requirements.

I'd never play a shooter on a console. It's for racing and platforming or 3rd person games like Assassin's Creed or God of War.

There are reportedly some native 1080p PS3 games, but none of those interest me as of now. Correction: It seems that GT5 Prologue is native 1080p, which would be amazing.

As before, exclude online MP for now. When I do become interested (for example GT5), I'm sure the PS3 will have a more than suitable online system by then. Which brings me to the other point: GT5 I believe is a PS3 exclusive, yes? That's another big seller for me, because I have played every GT game obsessively since ever. I wonder if my PS2 force feedback wheel will work with the PS3, hmm.

BluRay is looking like a big plus right now too. I'm one of those people who doesn't mind paying good money for good stuff and if there's a movie I really like, I'll shell out the $35 to watch it with DTS and possibly as high as 1080p.

I'm still very interested in the pros of the XBox 360 though and still considering the options.
