To learn work your way through the classes from d to u, and avoid the exotics or classics. American muscle cars have potential but they are not easy to drive, and some of the exotics pack enough hp and torque to tear themselves in half but don't have the handling to back it.
I suggest if you find a certain car type you need for a race unwieldy to put the front and rear adjustable aerodynamics kits on them, they trick you into thinking they sacrifice a lot of speed but that is set to the middle even set to all speed on traction while still offering speed so they can help a lot.
You should also prioritize the stats in order of handling, acceleration, braking, then speed. The issue with speed is around 5.0 or 6.0 is a high enough max speed for most courses unless your acceleration is sick. For instance my mustang gt can't even approach it's top speed in u class even coming in hot to the Nürburgring straight which I believe is the longest straight in the game. For many cars the difference from s to u is 0.1 or 0.2 in most stats and like 1.0 or 2.0 in speed which is useless.

Yeah, it's not top speed the matters, it's average speed. A slippery car might have a higher theoretical top speed, but on the track a car with a lot of downforce will go faster, because it doesn't have to slow so much in the corners. A Lingenfelter Corvette may be theoretically faster than an R1, but take both around the Nurburgring. You'll be riding the brakes like made in the Lingenfelter, but you can take most of the corners at full throttle in an R1.

I think everyone knows the lingenfelter is more or less a joke car, it's like any of the american cars but even more out of wack with its speed to handling ratio.

I actually have a completely upgraded Ligenfelter in my garage, all 850 bhp of goodness. I don't normally drive with any aids, and this car is very hard to control WITH traction and stability control enabled. But MY GOD is it fast. I've had it up to 220mph before running out of track... going to give it a run on the Nurburgring to see what I can get on that straight.
EDIT: 232mph before I ran out of track. :-)
EDIT: 234mph

For the record, I love the Lingenfelter. There's something about the barabous insanity which makes the car appealing, if impractical. And I've been driving it quite a bit this evening. I've learned a few things too.
You don't drive the Lingenfelter with stability control on. Stability control is a bit half-assed at the best of times and completely fails when it comes to the 'felter. If you drive with ABS and stab. control you can experience the amusment of watching the stab. control trigger the antilock brakes as it tries to keep the car in a straight line. You can't drive this car in a straight line. You just have to learn to love and control the insane power slides.
And believe it or not, you can get it around the Nurburgring in about 7:30, maybe faster.
EDIT: I knew it could do 7:30. 7:29.947. I'm proud of that time. :-)

I need to take my exige 240 around the Nurburgring, I always find the course terribly boring and I have been working on my new york time with my mustang. I need to start practicing with the assists off though, I normally have them on. Besides the lingenfelter what are your favorite cars?

Aha! I knew it was possible. 7:28.947s around the Nurburgring in a Lingenfelter. I am proud of that time. :-)
The Maserati MC12 is probably my favorite car from a technical standpoint. Extremely stable, although a little underpowered in its stock configuration. Although my favorite favorite is probably the Ford GT. It's just a fun car to drive.
