Question Battlefield Comparison

Hi guys, thought I would post with the age old question - "Is it like the Battlefield series (BF2, 2142, etc)?" Looks like it has some legs here. Just wondering if it's a buy.

The game was designed by the Desert Combat (BF1942 Mod) developers / BF2 R&D team. This game draws heavily from the Battlefield franchise. It has the squad-based elements from BF2, draws from elements from BF1942 (Ammo crates for example) and mix that in with 2142 gameplay. The twist to it is the frontline and gameplay mechanics and more action oriented kits. You still have a specific role in FFOW when you pick your kit and role, but this time you aren't shock paddling people or throwing down ammo packs; rather you are blowing people to smithereens.

Without writing an essay it comes down to the BF series has better squad mechanics and FFoW has better map mechanics. Game play is closer to BF2142 (minus Medics) in that combat will be decided away from flags holding key terrain and using good positioning and fights wont often involve just one squad from each team.

Unless, like me, these games are your bread and butter I'd let this one sit for a while. The base of a good game is there but this an extended Beta. If you don't really love these games you're going to burn out on it before it hits its stride because it's not what it could be.

Being somewhat professionally involved in gaming, I think this is pretty sweet. It's got a long way to go, but after launch at least, the title is very playable, and gives me a gut feel that it will improve well with patches. I really love how the role experience system gives successive rounds a kind of build in intensity. Weapons are good, vehicles are good. Some balancing to do.

AS soon as they get robust VOIP, improvements to squad and performance in there, along with some more maps, I'd say I'll probably remove BF2 from my machine and finally be EA free

No medics. Your character will regen health over time as long as you aren't getting shot.

But I can't tell you how many times I've ran from cover to help a fallen teammate before I remembered that I don't have a defib.

It definitely changes the tempo of a battle when you know there's no rez coming after you take a fall. Personally, I would of rather had a medic class, but the game is good without it and it adds to the importance of a smart SL, especially on the larger maps.

Damn, I would surely miss being in the full squad of unkillable medics, Battlefield style.

Check out Bommando's thread on suggestions on how to improve FFoW if you haven't already for more differences between the two games. Bom and I were talking a couple of weeks ago about how in writing the suggestions it became apparent that most of the suggestions to improve the game were key things that Battlefield 2 had and FFoW didn't. BF2was such a ground breaking game for squad functions and communication. It is arguably the best massive squad based team player games out there still. For me, FFoW is a refreshing change to BF2 only because I've played BF2 and POE2 so much over the past 2-3years.

I'm a hardcore medic. If my team is under fire, I would rather position myself in between members of my squad and hold a medpac than throwing fire. I pride myself in my rez's and desire to keep the SL and SM's up and moving. It is a big adjustment for me to not have the healing ability and I'm learning about better positioning and not running into the middle of a firefight.

In the end, I'm waiting for some patches to fix/add some features and then we'll see how things shape up.

You know, the more I play this game the more I'm not liking it and I think that's because I loved the intrinsics of BF - much easy squad play, voip and so far it just seemed a much smoother game to play. Maybe after a few patches it'll be up to snuff, but right now BF still has it beat hands down.
