Turns out one of my RAM slots doesn't work on my motherboard so I can only use 3 GB

You will still be happy for a while with 3. I have 4G on XP 32 so it only addresses at 3.25. With all my junk running and FFoW on high I still have 1.5 available.
Did you get your Steam install running?
