Post An introduction to Rainbow Six Vegas 2

Introduction

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 has currently been released for consoles and the PC release is only about 3 weeks away, so I thought it was time for a guide to introduce people to RSV 2, get people interested in this awesome looking game and to answer questions. I'll start off with a brief introduction to the game itself:

Game summary

Vegas 2 is, as the name suggests, set in the Las Vegas of the near future. It is the sequel to RSV 1, which came out in november 2006. It's a tactical, squad based FPS. In storyline mode, you play as the leader of a three men squad, in coop, a friend of yours will take the role of an additional squad member. The story itself is said to not be that interesting, but that's, according to the developers not where the real focus was at anyway, because the qualities of this game come to it's own in multiplayer. There's a wide variety of different things you can do along with other players:

Multiplayer

First off, you got the coop I mentioned before, where you can play through the whole storyline along with one friend. Then theres the terrorist hunt mode, where you can play together with 3 other players and your objective is to eliminate all the terrorist, who will be hiding in different spots on the map.
And except for these two gametypes there is of course the regular multiplayer. In online multiplayer the player limit is 14, with 16 for the dedicated servers. The different gamemodes read as follows:
  • Deathmatch, free for all fragging
  • Team Deathmatch, TvT with optional respawns
  • Attack and Defend, consists of Item Extraction, Hostage Rescue and Demolition (depending on the map)
  • Team Leader, one player takes the role of team leader, who the team is supposed to defend. Players can only respawn while the Team Leader is still alive
  • Total Conquest, a gamemode similar to Conquest in the Battlefield games and Domination in CoD 4

Now for some even cooler stuff:

Exciting Features

RSV 2 promises to have one of the most in depth character customization systems there has been in first person shooters until now and from the videos I've seen so far, this is definitely not far from the truth. You will be able to customize your character from your helmet and your face, down to your body, legs and arms to your weapon you can pick out of a selection of 90 different ones.
Because there are so many different weapons, you will now be able to carry two primary weapons and one sidearm in both storymode and terrorist hunt, while you will still be allowed to carry only one in MP. Another improvement over RSV 1, is that you will actually be able to shoot through cover now too, like you can in Call of Duty 4.
And one of the things I personally loved in RSV 1 and which will also be included in RSV 2 is the cover system: If you are close to a wall, or next to a doorway, you can press a button, which will make you stick to the wall and the camera will change into third person mode. From here you can either blindfire into the room, or fire more accurately, with the camera placed on your shoulder.

I can post way more features of this game here, but some gameplay videos will tell you more about this game than I will ever be able to write.
Here are some websites and links I can recommend to you to watch if you're looking for some RSV 2 gameplay:

URL's and interesting websites

Official RSV 2 website
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 at Gametrailers.com (be sure to also check out the user videos)
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 at IGN.com (a review, videoreview and a large collection of videos)
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 Multiplayer footage at YouTube.com

Note: All the footage I linked to is taken from either the Xbox 360 or the PS3 version, there are no PC videos yet.

Vegas 2 Q&A

I will post a small amount of questions and answers here, which I could imagine one of you would want to know. If you have a question too, please post it below and I will include it here, along with an answer. (hopefully)

Q: What's the exact releasedate for the PC?
A: April the 15th

Q: What are the *minimal* system requirements for RSV 2?
A: Both the minimal and recommended requirements are listed here

Q: What guns are there in the game?
A: There is a list of all the weapons in the game here

Thanks for the extensive post for this game. You already got me warmed up, a tactical shooter with elements from Call of Duty 4. I played Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield for a while, that really was a realistic game. I never played Rainbow Six after that again. Maybe this would be a good one to pickup again.

Later,

Wow, nice work. I am itching to play a good tactical (bad word!) shooter.

A couple of interesting updates:
  • I haven't been able to get my hands on the game myself yet but according to a guy on the Ubi forums who does have the PC version already, there WILL be a webcam option when choosing your appearance (face). (source)
  • I also came across a website Ubi created with some tips and tricks for multiplayer, multiplayer maps and single player walkthroughs: RSV 2 Help
I do think they mention a few tips which I find rather cheap, like creating your own crosshair by toggling the equipment selection screen. They even show how to use it to good effect with a sniper rifle!

Edit, found another interesting item:
  • There IS VoIP in the PC version! (source)

If the PC version is as good as I hope, I'm down for some co-op action as well. Though after the Frontlines mess, I'll hold off until the reviews come out and I hear back from all of you early birds on if it's worth it.
