I came up with Beatnik after registering for Q3F (Quake 3 Fortress) and needing a sign-in name. I had a bunch of Ginsberg, Kerouac and Burroughs books on the shelf at the time, and the singer from a band I was in back in college had a line in one song that went "I am what I am, and what I am is a Beat-nik", so I ran with it.
It's not super original, but I've used it for about 10 years now so I guess it's here to stay.

I started out on Quake 1 with 'CannonFodder', but by the time Quake 2 came out, there were just too many people with that name...So I took on the name of the region in Maine that I'm from, Down East (think Pet Sementary)...It's a region about the size of Rhode Island with only 70k people, so I doubt I will run into too many witht the screen name.

CoH was a cool concept. Too bad it was boring.
jep was my old IRC nick from university days, which in turn was chosen to make fun of a friend's nick. Since most of my group of friends hung out on IRC, and 'jep' is pronounceable, it turned into a real nickname. When HL2 came out I wanted to sign up for Steam with the account name 'jep' but Steam required 8 letters, so I tacked 'zilla' onto the end, and continued using 'jepzilla' where-ever I needed a lengthier username, notably my BF2 name.
And jep is all in lowercase.

One day back in college, i went to my radio station me and my friend had on campus. Our friend Jen was there with us. Earlier that day i decided to shave my pubs. So out of nowhere, on the air mind you, i announced that i shaved my pubs. Everything went silent and Jen just says "Doesnt it look like an upside-down snail?" I look at her and go "ya know what? it kinda does!"
So the next day everyone on campus just started callin me Snail and it stuck for the rest of college. Most of my friends still call me Snail to this day. And i always keep it trimmed. Whats the point of being called Snail if i cant live up to the name?

Mine is from a made up word taken from the Simpsons. I started using it in the first online game i played a lot, battlefield 2. In other games before that I went by a bunch of random names I can barely remember. Not playing online shooters much at all before i chose it i didn't realize how bad a choice it was. Its too long and a lot of people cant pronounce it, although its a fake word so it doesn't really matter. Also theres no obvious abbreviation for it, "Em" sounds like somebody clearing their throat. It slows down communications sometimes...."Em....Embigg....Embiggener theres a spy ......oh too late".
