Default The misappropriation of gamer/nerd culture

Warning: Rant Ahead!

What is with the whole nerd chic movement? I see kids wearing stuff like this and this who are way too young to have ever been alive during the heyday of NES let alone old school Activision.

In music I hear the same thing - direct sampling of classic video game sounds or heavily video game influenced music like Crystal Castles. Now don't get me wrong I really like their music but I like it because it represents my childhood and I can't help but get annoyed that my childhood has been misappropriated by trendy kids as some sort of "ironic old school cool" kind of movement. Making matters worse, these fools have their heads rammed so far up their asses they are ripping off a sound they don't even understand:

So let's see, you rip off the classic video game sound and use it as the foundation of your music but you have nothing to do with it? Ok then.

The worst part is I will still go see these clowns when they are in town because their music makes me feel nostalgic. I'm such a whore.

That's terrible. You should listen to Dr. Wily and the Robotmasters or Game Over instead because Crystal Castles look and sound like homos.

As far as video game influenced metal goes I like Machinae Supremacy a lot better. These guys practically invented the SID Metal genre. I am not resentful of them because A) they were old enough to be there so it's legit and B) they are cheesy (in a good way) not trendy.

Crystal Castles was a great game. My initials were ALWAYS featured on the attract screen of every CC machine around.

As for the actual topic, it doesn't bother me if people embrace things from before they were born. I first noticed it when I saw kids wearing old-style AC/DC and Iron Maiden shirts, and I also noticed the old Atari logo shirts. I think it's cool that these classic things are being kept alive.

I wish I had some of my old concert shirts now. I'd get them out and ... no wait, I think they would be a size small... not a good plan. Sigh... the good old days of $15 concerts are so far gone.

They claim their name is taken from She-Ra's magical fortress which seems dubious to me. Crystal Castles the game was (is) amazing though.

There are still plenty of good $15 concerts to be found but it involves seeing bands before they get huge. To be honest I would rather see some lesser band at a small venue for cheap than a superband in a stadium with horrible acoustics and no atmosphere for some outrageous price.

I'm playing Shining Force on my Wii, maybe they could include that kick ass combat music from that!

I wouldn't say CC is emo. If anything they are hipster.
