Spoilers ahead. If I ruin anything for you, its your own fault for being stupid.
My initial reaction to this movie was that it was stupid. I generally think anyone that believes in global warming is a band wagon joining moron. Right after the movie I felt like I had sat through 90 minutes of pure brainwashing. You can disagree with me on global warming all ya want, but it doesnt really matter as it pertains to the movie.
On the surface, the theme seems to be that global warming is going to be the end of us all and we should do something about it. However, the true theme of the movie is that we are always looking for the next big problem, the next boogie man, and that we are 'killing ourselves' by doing that. It seems almost everyone (including me at first) thought it was about global warming.
The first big sign that this is the true theme is the fake house. Terrorism, global warming and previously the red scare are just scary things we kill ourselves over when they are almost certainly just perceived threats. Just fake threats. Before the fake house, remember the exodus of new york? Its surprisingly peaceful--no protests. Because they have no idea what they are actually running from.
A large billboard halfway through the movie showed a sign that said "You deserve this!". Some people would say you deserve dying because you neglect the environment, but truly you deserve killing yourself for believing in such silly boogie men.
Initially the main characters believe that being in large groups will have them contract the neuro toxin. The meaning of this is that this hysteria we bring on ourselves is just brought upon by large groups who kill themselves over it.
Eventually, it trickles down to small people such as the old woman. The woman suggested that she didnt want anything to do with the world, and it didnt care about her. But still, she had a fear of it (Remember how paranoid she was about Wahlberg stealing her shit?) and ending up killing herself for it. The baby being born at the end is possible hope for some people, but as the european country depicted at the end shows, the problem will always persist. We are always going to have a boogie man, the question of what it is we do not know.
Anyway, this is one of the more thought provoking movies ive seen in some time. The most brilliant thing about this movie that truly made me respect Shamalamaamamalan is that most people are still going to believe the theme of the movie is that either terrorism or global warming is bad. But in reality, the fact that most people see the movie that way only proves his point that we always believe in some boogie man.
