Over the last few years, I've watched some really good TV shows which were hidden away in the garbage heap which is typical television. I liked some of these shows so much that I practically FORCED friends and family to watch them. Right now, I am just about to start watching a new miniseries, and I thought it might be cool to share some views with you guys and see if there are any other gems I have missed.
So I'll give you my list of gems, and you guys can add yours. They don't have to be recent. A little explanation of what makes a show good can help others to know if it fits their taste. NO SPOILERS in this thread please.
Arrested Development
- hands down the best comedy series ever made
- it is non-stop gags with no laugh track
Deadwood
- dramatic western with serious language issues
- the very intense story of a small lawless town in the 1870's
- the characters are mostly based on real people
The Wire
- gangsta's, cops, and politicians in Baltimore (and reporters)
- a very real show with fantastic characters
- some will find it short on action, but the show sneaks up on you with some classic moments
Rome
- it's Rome, sometime in the 50 BC timeframe, with Julius C and all that
- very real like The Wire, except that I don't think Romans had english accents
- a good story with great characters again and some really twisted events
- lots of nudity, not all good
OZ
- prison drama, pretty real, but mostly surreal
- great characters again
- lots of scheming and shanking
- lots of nudity, all bad
The Shield
- gritty, aggressive cop drama
- intense story line revolving entirely around cops taking liberties and being investigated by other cops
Extras
- great comedy, the story of some movie extras dreaming of becoming real actors and their strange personality quirks
- lots of cameos
