Default Good TV shows and series'

Over the last few years, I've watched some really good TV shows which were hidden away in the garbage heap which is typical television. I liked some of these shows so much that I practically FORCED friends and family to watch them. Right now, I am just about to start watching a new miniseries, and I thought it might be cool to share some views with you guys and see if there are any other gems I have missed.

So I'll give you my list of gems, and you guys can add yours. They don't have to be recent. A little explanation of what makes a show good can help others to know if it fits their taste. NO SPOILERS in this thread please.

Arrested Development
- hands down the best comedy series ever made
- it is non-stop gags with no laugh track

Deadwood
- dramatic western with serious language issues
- the very intense story of a small lawless town in the 1870's
- the characters are mostly based on real people

The Wire
- gangsta's, cops, and politicians in Baltimore (and reporters)
- a very real show with fantastic characters
- some will find it short on action, but the show sneaks up on you with some classic moments

Rome
- it's Rome, sometime in the 50 BC timeframe, with Julius C and all that
- very real like The Wire, except that I don't think Romans had english accents
- a good story with great characters again and some really twisted events
- lots of nudity, not all good

OZ
- prison drama, pretty real, but mostly surreal
- great characters again
- lots of scheming and shanking
- lots of nudity, all bad

The Shield
- gritty, aggressive cop drama
- intense story line revolving entirely around cops taking liberties and being investigated by other cops

Extras
- great comedy, the story of some movie extras dreaming of becoming real actors and their strange personality quirks
- lots of cameos

probably my favorite show on television at the moment is The Venture Bros. its basically a cartoon thats a spoof on the old 80's Hanna Barbara cartoons like Johnny Quest. The show is in its third season at the moment. New episodes are on at 11:30 eastern on Sundays, or you can watch the most recent episode on adultswim.com if you want to check it out.

I typically don't watch TV all to much, but I buy a lot of seasons after previewing episodes from iTunes or downloading them.

1. Firefly
2. Stargate SG1
3. Stargate Atlantis
4. Babylon 5
5. X-Files
6. Psych
7. The Office
8. Heroes
9. Deadwood
10. Dexter
11. Arrested Development
12. Ghost Hunters
13. Hells Kitchen
14. Kitchen Nightmares
15. Californication
16. Smallville
17. Battlestar
18. Blood Ties
19. Moonlight
20. Burn Notice

They are in no particular order since what I like is more dependent on my mood than anything else.

I dont watch much TV, I do watch a lot of movies.
I do like Heroes and Lost, great stories there.
But for just straight up enjoyment, nothing is better than the Simpson's and Family Guy.
Pound for pound, day after day, Family Guy wins, the show brings me to tears on a daily basis.

Weeds. Its a showtime series about a recently widowed woman who resorts to selling marijuana to make ends meet. Show touches on just about every socially taboo thing you could think of.

As icky said, arrested development is awesome and probably ranks as my favorite series of all time. I have never laughed so hard and so constantly for a sitcom ever.
