I suggest that you register all of your high value items with College Security, they will place a barcode in case they are ever stolen. The lock box is a good idea..however I can assume that someone can just steal that. My theory is that if you don't want it stolen, then don't bring it the first semester. Use your first semester to feel everyone out and for christ sakes get out and see the city and the surrounding area. This should take up most of your time, well between that and drinking and the womaning..

I also suggest that you bring a prepaid cellphone as a back up, just in case. I also suggest a sleeping eye mask. I know it will look queer, but it will help you shut out the lights and you can pop most of them in the fridge for when you are hungover.

Make sure your lockbox is pretty substantial because you'll want to store snacks in it plus larger boxes are harder to just walk off with (occasionally it happens). You'll also want to password your PC.

My brother already suggested that, much to the chagrin of my sister.

Aside from what everyone else has warned/told you about; If you bring a Laptop, get tracking software for it, also get one of the locking power cables for it. I avoided using wi-fi as well since we had a ton of security issues.

The most important thing though is not to be a homesick bitch and bring your A game personality.

If you do have a mini-fridge, I would recommend putting a simple hinge and a padlock on it. It pisses L10N off whenever he wants a soda...

Printer is usually something you don't think about.

Digital Camera? iPod cables? Otherwise there isn't much else that I can think of.

First week or month is usually a little chaotic just learning all the buildings, shortcuts and the rooms where your classes are. While finding the building where your class is usually as easy as reading a map, finding your classroom once inside can be confusing if the building is old. As a freshman, most of your classes will probably be in lecture halls which are usually easy to find. But if you're in smaller classes and you're on campus early enough before classes begin, it can't hurt to familiarize yourself with where your classrooms are. Where I went to school, the English building was a literal maze where room numbers made no sense and you had split level floors. You could wander for half a hour and not find the room you were looking for.

And if you're going to a school with a big football program and you're the drinking type, a good hip flask is always handy.

Edit: Oh I forgot to mention getting some Damp Rid.

Advice I got from an upperclassman at my school:

1. Sharpies. Even if you don't live with thieving asshole roommates, you can use the sharpies to mark your food (microwavables, cookies, etc), along with some other items in case their friends who come over are thieves. And if they continue to steal it, you can use said sharpies to draw penises on their faces when they pass out. Permanent ink rules!

2. Tupperware. When free food events happen on campus, break out the little plastic boxes and load up. Also good for storing random crap/sorting. I don't smoke myself, but apparently they also block smoke detectors fairly well.

3. Wet wipes. Preferably antibacterial/alcohol wipes. Helps clean up messes, or when some drunk guy spills all over your room/living space. Also, good for wiping down your desk etc. when you move in. Remember: Depending on the age of your school and dorm building, an army of freshmen have moved in and out of that room. And you're a fool if you think every one of them cleaned up after themselves, and/or company.
