1: Soap on a Rope
2: Carton of Cigarettes
....Oh wait, that's for Prison.....
For College:
Don't buy any big stuff yet, see what your roommate will bring...(fridge, stereo, Loft, ect)
Get an electric Kettle, wide one so you can cook Raman Noodles in it...Some don't allow hot plates, but will allow the Kettle...
Have you ever shared a room with a stranger b4? (summer camp ect?) if not, expect a bit of a shock there...
Know how to do Laundry? Don't laugh, alot of people don't at your age...Get a Laundry Bag...
Flip Flops! Don't go do the communal showers in bare feet.
Ear Plugs are a must....
A Lock box or chest with a GOOD Lock on it...
Bike....especially if you don't have a car.....
Porn....duh....
Dialup modem for your PC, YOU are not allowed on the server with an 8 ping...

Ear plugs are a good idea.
If you are into sports at all don't forget your cleats, baseball glove what ever. If you are living on campus people are alway doing something and there are tons of intrumurals you can join.

Forget-me-now?
I lived at home for school, but I know my sister always needed change for doing laundry. Lots and lots of change. Seems like something easy to get, but if you hit your parents up for laundry change, it doesn't have to come out of your regular budget.

Downeast got a lot of what I would say off the top of my head, but on the security side remember never to leave anything you care about at all out in the open. If people can't see your ipod, wallet, or cell they generally won't think about jacking it. Don't be the stupid person who brings stacks of 20s or 50s as cash, because people will find out pretty quickly. See if your parents will get you a limited credit card or something equivalent to a visa buxx card, that way if someone jacks it all you need to do is report it missing and everything is good. Really all the preparation in the world isn't going to help you remember everything so just be ready to all of sudden remember something you need/want. The first year with someone you don't know will probably suck, especially if they are losing it halfway through the year.

I had TWO roommates. How's that for suckage? And one of them brought a six foot bong.
"Six feet?"
"Yes."
"(!)"
"I know."
Clothes, toothbrush, cleats (not "clete's"), computer, and you're good to go. Extra money never hurt neither.

That sounds awful.
You really just need to worry about bringing personal stuff. Maybe get some decent speakers for your PC so that's your tv/clock radio/boom box. Multi-function stuff like this will suddenly become much more valuable to you to save space.
Don't worry about bringing a bunch of other stuff with you to college - there's plenty of Bed Bath & Beyonds and Targets in Dallas and it's easier to take it across town than across states.
I'll second shower flip-flops, ear plugs, and quarters for laundry, and ditching cash for a debit card. I'd recommend getting a digital camera too and take a lot of pics this first year. You'll be pining for the good ol' days soon enough. Start doing your own laundry and start cooking a little for yourself now if you haven't already. You can save a shitload of money making your own food occassionally.
And make friends with your dorm neighbors quickly (a few games of 3-man or Quarters seems to help with that) to watch your back when you're drinking to excess, which you most likely will be doing. If you don't have a car, quickly make friends with someone who does.
And drink the free frat beer but resist the urge to Rush.
I'm jealous - my freshman year was one of the funnest years of my life. I don't remember most of it but from what I'm told it was very enjoyable.

Ive already gots me a debit card, but a lockbox is smart for my ipod, wallet (since some cash is always nice) and, of course, porno.
Flip flops are a good idea for the shower. Fortunately on each floor of the dorm there are 4 showers, each in their own little room, and they are cleaned every day. Still, thats a lot of people in one day so flip flops will come in handy.
Ear plugs are also a great idea. Chances are ill get stuck with the fat guy who snores all night.
Quote tags apparently dont work anymore: And drink the free frat beer but resist the urge to Rush.
Theres no way in hell im rushing, but good advice on the free beer. Frats seem completely and utterly ridiculous to me since all it is is essentially paying for friends. Seems to me they are for people who havent quite moved on from the cliquish high schools. Oh well, making fun of them oughta be fun.

Not rushing is the best advice in this thread. You're a wise man for heeding it.
Ahhhhhhh, the memories. Amazing how much balls some of those Greeks have when they outnumber you. They shrink faster than an Irish package in ice water when pressed tho. I had forgotten how much fun it was to convert Greek teeth into Chicklets.
