Default MMOs and Focused Gaming

I realize this is in the Tabula Rasa section of our forums and it's not 100% dedicated to TR. But since we don't have a general MMO section, I couldn't think of anywhere better to put it.

I could have thrown it into the General forum, but I'm looking for a more focused audience. (no pun or disrespect intended.)

Alright, I've been thinking this over for the past week or so and after having some conversations with Bomm, I was going to put up some sort of Official Announcement about the state of MMO's here and what our plans are in that regard.

However, everything I was coming up with really depended on one thing, and that's interest.

Let's face it, as we stand right now, we're basically an FPS community. It's where we've been drawing most of our membership from and where most of our playing backgrounds lie.

Which is just fine with me, but it does make me wonder if it's even possible to build an MMO following or a community presence here based on our history.

L10N had a post about RPG's up in the general forum that sparked some good discussion, but it really wasn't centered on anything in specific. Which is what I want to do here.

So the question is, if we went ahead with an MMO/RPG aspect to Focused Gaming, how many people would be interested in being a part of that? Now I'm not asking for Admins or looking for people to be guild leaders....yet. All I'm wondering is if there is a legit interest in trying to make something happen at -F-.

I realize that MMO crowds usually draw from a much different demographic than your typical FPS games do. Sure, both types have wide ranges of players, from the casual to the super hard core, know everything about the game, min/max type. But there's just a fundamental difference in pacing and style. Yes, combat in MMO's can be very dynamic, especially with the latest batch of games, TR included. However, 99% of them will never be confused with an FPS, nor do they even try to be. Combat is still almost always based on chance and behind the scenes dice rolls and not a player's l33t twitch skills.

Another difference with MMO's from your basic FPS is that the dedication to a single game is usually a notch or two higher. Mostly that's do to the sheer amount of time and energy needed to level your character/characters in game. Yes, FPS players dedicate themselves to one game, but it's not as huge of a deal to play numerous games and suffer no loss of skill or standing within a game.

Take time off from an MMO however, or don't put yourself fully into one game and you will quickly find yourself way behind your friends in both levels and loot. Not to mention that your class may have changed 3 times in the last month due to balance patches.

So you usually don't catch MMO players jumping around from game to game very often. Unless of course, the game they've chosen sucks. Then all bets are off. But once they do find one they really love, they can stay with that game for years at a time.

All of that is a long way of saying that I don't expect to carry a large crossover audience between our base of FPS gamers to MMO gamers.

So is it worth the effort to try and build an MMO based sub-community within -F- almost from scratch?

I know I'm more than willing to put in the time if people really want to make a go of it. The question however, is really two fold.

One; Do we have enough people, or can we get enough people, interested in a currently released or near future MMO? And Two; if there's interest do we have people that would be dedicated to making it work as more than just a tiny niche?

What I'm talking about is a Guild section within Focused Gaming that will have its own forums, TS channel, information area, officers section and much more. But to do that, we need people that can and will be active recruiters and will want to build a guild, that eventually, will be able to have chapters in different games depending on interest.

My initial thought is/was to do this with Tabula Rasa, as it's one of the new MMO's that really does have an FPS aspect to it. Hell, ask Bommando about that. He HATES MMO's, yet he's had a blast in TR. The game is very polished, has smallish yet dedicated community, great DEV support and offers a very unique twist on the typical fantasy based MMO that dominates the genre. There are times in game when you really do feel like you're in the middle of a war zone and I've yet to really notice a level grind.

Yes, there is always a grind, but at least TR doesn't make it feel like it's a second job just to level your character.

For those reasons and more, I think it would be the easiest game to start with as it really could draw some pure FPS gamers into the fold. However, if the interest just isn't there, (which to be honest, it really hasn't been) I'm also open to building up towards either Age of Conan or Warhammer. (Or both or whatever else we can think of, if you want the bottom line truth.)

Conan looks to be releasing first however with MMO's, you never really know until the day before it ships.

But before we do any of that, let's see who's interested, REALLY interested in making a go of it. Let me have your thoughts, interest level, opinions and why you think it will or won't work.

Maybe the best thing would be to try and lure an existing guild into the fold and then build our brand from there, but to do that we would have to offer them something that they don't already have. Which may be problematic.

So have at it.

(I know our usual response is to throw in a smart ass comment or 10, but can we at least be constructive and stay on topic with them this time? )

I am open to MMOs, it just has to be the right game. I've been waiting for Warhammer Online.

Yeah I think it's kind of a bad idea to really push for an MMO segment. If you look at other non-MMO communities that have MMO aspects (like TG), the MMO crowd is usually a bunch of pretty obnoxious and weird people that don't really contribute to the greater whole and just isolate themselves.

Plus that stuff's mad dorky.

I love RPGs and some types of MMOs. I'm still playing Hellgate a lot. I'm sure a MMO guild can work here, but you can't expect it overnight. I think the fastest way to achieve this would be to start getting into an MMO before it is released and hit the official/popular forums. Being a strong force on their forums would most likely draw people to us (-F-).

But then again I can be wrong.

Snail, you post on the forums, play in game with us and contribute to the community, to me that makes you part of the community. You don't have to be a subscriber here to be a member of -F-. And more importantly, you don't have to contribute $'s to have your opinion matter. Being a subscriber is greatly appreciated, but it's not how we judge people around here.

I appreciate the input from everyone, no matter if you're for the idea or against it.

Zoopy, that is my thought process if we can't get a strong group going with TR. Pick a game that we can all or mostly agree on and start getting out name out there...sort of like what we want to do with some other FPS games. I'd still love to make it happen with Tabula Rasa since we already have a small presence there, but we need people that want to play on a consistant basis.

I played the Tabula Rasa beta for a long time and would have loved to continue...but I can't stand those monthly fee's. Having MMO's as a part of -F- couldn't hurt, but for people like me, I only go for the free MMO's.

If anyone ever played Face of Mankind, they had a 2 year beta and I was in it for about 1.5 years. It was a game you either hated it or loved it, there was no in between. I really enjoyed it back in the days of the beta. Was a very team/faction oriented game. They had a pretty good community too.

Sadly after the beta ended and they made you pay a $12 monthly fee, just about half of the people from the beta dropped from the game and never played again. But there is no hope, a few months ago they announced they are bringing back Face of Mankind with a new name called "Face of Mankind:Rebirth" which will be free to play and they hope everyone from the beta and before the monthly fee's will be coming back, hence the name "Rebirth". Its supposedley to be released pretty soon.

The game is extremely similar to Tabula Rasa, third person shooting MMO. But it is way more team/faction oriented.

Main website it here if you wanted to check it out: http://fomportal.com/

Just a suggestion if you guys can't decide on an MMO.

Since the websites being reconstructed I can give you a brief rundown of the game:

Basically the game is split into 6 factions, all played by human characters, their were Aliens in the game that occasionally randomely assaulted a few outer world bases and needed to be taken care of, but no where near as often as it happens in Tabula Rasa. Almost all the fighting in Face of Mankind happend between factions.

The Factions:

L.E.D. (Law Enforcement Department) - This was the faction I chose when playing in the 2 year beta. It was the funnest and most addicting faction to play as because we were always on constant patrol in highly populated civilian areas and always fighting against Mercs and Gangs. I was positioned in the DMC, the DMC was the jailhouse of the game. A giant facility that held all the criminals of the game. The DMC also served as the L.E.D.'s command central since it was so secure. The DMC was so fun to be at though, it was constantley under attack by Mercs and Gangs trying to bust out comrades or just killing cops for fun. I rose very high in the ranks of DMC guard, became second in command, and had alot of fun.

F.D.C. - Basically the military of the game and the L.E.D.'s closest friends, most of the time anyway. There was a short war between L.E.D. and F.D.C. when two leaders couldn't get along. But that was soon resolved. I had a close friend play on F.D.C. and L.E.D. and F.D.C. did countless raids on Gang territory and Merc territory. Huge firefights ensued and was a shitload of fun.

The Brotherhood - The Gang members of the game, deal drugs, kill civilians for looting, hired hitmen, and always raged war against L.E.D. Brotherhood put up some nasty fights back in the DMC and alot of the time we had to get FDC back up to help us. They had power in numbers like crazy.

The Mercs - Speaks for itself, allied with the Brotherhood to cause general chaos and mayhem in the game that LED and FDC have to enforce. Though its not like when your an LED or FDC your instantley start shooting at Mercs and Brotherhood when you see them. Some of them don't commit crimes at all and just support the gang. You gotta witness an act against LED law to start a fight or arrest them. Most noobies on LED just thought you shoot them on sight and caused alot of trouble.

Vortex Inc. - Vortex industry members are all about buying, selling, and making money. The richest faction at the time. They have no fighting skill but can be great suppliers when needed.

Mining Inc. - Also speaks for itself, miners of the game. Traveled to distant planets not patrolled by LED or FDC to obtain some rare minerals and strike it rich. Think of them as Vortex guys but alot more daring with some fighting ability.

Rebirth plans to change quite a few things to the game, but I'm pretty sure the factions are going to stay the same. Just hope its released soon, I cried like a little school girl when I first heard the game was coming back with "Rebirth".

Sounds like a great game, Snips. I'll check out the site straight away.

To be honest, I really wish Planetside had taken off back in the day. The game still has a solid following and is still supported, though nothing like it used to be. I can remember just some EPIC battles in that game over bridges. I've still yet to experience the same feeling in an FPS as I did there because the battles were so free flowing with attacks and counters and no worries about map timers.

It's another option that is a pure combination of FPS style gaming with some MMO elements thrown in. When you get down to it, it really fits more into what we are used to than anything else. However, the problem agan is the monthly fee.

I'm glad you brought that up because it is an important point and probably one of the main reasons why so many pure FPS players don't try MMO's. We are so used to things being free to play (after the initial purchase) that having to pay a monthly fee goes against some people's religion.

I can honestly see both sides of the arguement, and who knows, maybe the Guild Wars model will finally catch on...someday.

Again, thanks for the tip and the link. Sounds like it might be right up our alley.

I love Guild Wars...then I got bored. I've always wanted to get into PvP but couldn't find the right people to join a guild.
