Question Your Top 5 Favourite TF2 Maps

OK, what are your five all-time favourite TF2 maps? Stock and custom inclusive. List them in order of preference from 1-5.

I'd like to look at mixing up our rotation a bit and start loading a greater variety of maps in prime time. I'll use this thread as a gauge to see which ones would be most appreciated.

1. Steel - So much fun and very creative. A great twist on CP. Not really any other map like it. I wish more maps like it would pop up.

2. Goldrush - I love the Payload game type and still enjoy this map despite tons of time on it.

3. Badwater Basin - Shooting up the list. I love the continuous nature of the map (as opposed to stages). Requires a whole lot of teamwork. It will probably pass Goldrush on my list the more I play it. Also love the variation in elevation.

4 (tie). Well (CTF version) - The CP version is okay, but the CTF version is where the fun is. My problem with the other CTF maps is they're a little too small for my liking. Well seems to be about right

4 (tie). Dustbowl - Still very enjoyable.

Honorable Mention: Bball w/ soldiers only

Just to keep things varied I'll mention customs only:

1. labor: hands down my favorite map. Often get a lot of epic rounds on this map; it's not terribly difficult to assault the center point with a decent rush, which makes it more enjoyable and keeps the battle changing between a fight for the center and a fight for the 2/4 point.

2. stag: lots of levels to fight on, lots of flanking, it's favorable to pretty much any class without having a single class being too dominant.

3. castle3: I'm still partial to the 3rd version of the map, 4th version just sucks once you get to the last stage.

4. boulder: Haven't played it a lot yet but I'm liking it more and more as I learn all the routes, especially for the last stage. I really don't like the last stage but only because it's possible for the attacking team to circle all the way around the left end to the defending team's spawn and camp it with a height advantage.

5. corporation: Again, I liked v2 better than the current v3. stage 2 is a lot of fun as a soldier, stage 3 is just chaos which is great when you get massive pushes and defenses that just barely hang in there.

I was looking through my map folder just now and noticed a lot of maps we don't play anymore: aqua, desert fortress, impact, mach4, corporation, circlejerk, canalzone, chaos, jailbreak, roswell... and there's a few I've played on other servers that may deserve a look into: egypt (which we played once on our server) and crossunder.

To be honest I enjoy all of the stock maps because they're all different enough that they're a ton of fun with the right teams. I never blame a map for a bad round, I'd much rather blame the teams first (and not just skill balance wise, but also a lack of teamwork and aggressiveness and class choice). People complain about hydro, turbine, and 2fort but I really don't see why :\ Think your team isn't pushing out? Be a medic and get those ubers to help break out. Hydro locked in a stalemate all the time? Play scout or spy, flank around and cause chaos in the backfield. You don't have to always say 'omg team can we please push out?' Just say 'hey demoman, I'll uber you and we'll take down that sentry outside the door, pyro follow us and clean up once it's down' It helps if you're a lot more specific and it's a lot more pleasant than hearing generic whining about 'the team' in general

This is exactly why I started the thread While customs can kill a server outside of prime time due to people being too lazy to download the maps, I don't see why we shouldn't load them up much more often when the server is mostly full of regs.

1: Steel
Steel always turns out as a very interesting round no matter what the plans are as it is just built so well. Every CP has multiple and good routes to it but still all of them can be defended against. There have been very few matches that didn't end up been won or lost bu the skin of the teeth.

2: Arena Mach (mach4 I think)
My favorite Arena map just because the layout is so simple, 2 main routes across but so many ways of getting from each route to the other and and the sewers are such a good spot for ambushes from both sides. It also has great sniper spots but at the same time the snipers are easy to avoid because of the sewers and stuff to hide behind.

3: pl_badwater
Prefer it to Goldrush as I found goldrush had too many places where one or two SG's could stop the payload for the entire game. On badwater even the best SG placement can be destroyed by one quick demo or pyro push. One of the last games I had on it involved me and (I think) Apollo both with SG's near the end (we were defending) and even though they were both in the best position to defend we had to constantly work while getting backed up by the rest of the team to ensure we had a chance.

4 and 5 need some thinking about...

I also like the new cart map who's name escapes me that the moment - the one in which the cart travels beneath a mountain via tunnel at the outset. Great map.
