Default What is World in Conflict?

World in Conflict is a Real-Time Tactics / Real-Time Strategy game that follows an alternate timeline based in 1989 where the Soviet Union is on the verge of collapsing and subsequently declares war on NATO and the US to survive as a nation. WiC has a solid Single-Player experience and three intense multiplayer modes that allow up to to 8v8 play.

You can download the demo, the Multiplayer Demo or you can buy it online.

What does Multiplayer offer?

World in Conflict offers multiplay that emphasizes teamwork and tactics without the need of complex base building and economies. Instead, players are to fight for Command Points in three different gamemode types scenarios: Domination, Assault and Tug of War. Players then have to choose their Specialty Class: Air, Armor, Infantry or Support and each class has its strengths and weaknesses. During a match, players are awarded "Tactical Aid" points for capturing Command Points, attacking enemies and repairing friendly units. These points can be used towards a variety of Air Strikes, Artillery Bombardments, Unit Airdrops and the launching of Tactical Nuclear missiles. World in Conflict allows the formation of Clans and Clan Matches and supports in-game VOIP.

downloaded the demo and it's pretty fun. The only issue I see is that it feels like company of heroes - which I really did not get into the multiplayer in that game. I found it just too punishing and not fun.

I did try a multiplayer skirmish and that seemed interesting with how you pick a role. Does anyone who has the demo want to play a multi?

I haven't played the demo, but does this allow you to play on the normal MP servers? If thats the case, that's even more reason to get the game if you can play MP for FREE.

I haven't played CoH either, but i've overheard pub players mention how this kicks the crap out of it. I don't know what you mean about the punishing aspect of MP in CoH, so if you explain that I can tell ya if there are any similarities. The easiest summary of WiC MP is that you choose a side/role and push onto the Command Points (or support the players that are) and use your Tactical Aid to assist you. Hopefully you won't get on a server that has 4 support players and they're all playing with 3 Heavy Artillery pieces, if you do see this, LEAVE the server.

Yea the game really seems to be about small numbers of units and good use of 'tactical aid', of which there is a surprising amount of different kinds.

Is infantry useful in multiplayer? It seems like it would just get obliterated and be worthless. If you try and hole up it seems someone would just use a laser guided bomb on you or whatever.

What determines how fast you get tactical aid points? Because in both skirmish and the singleplayer demo level it felt like I had an almost unlimited supply.

Infantry is the most lethal role if played properly. AT Infantry can obliterate armor; standard Infantry are effective against light armor, choppers and infantry; Snipers can mow down enemy infantry units if concealed. They can also take advantage of calling down transport choppers and APCs and rush points or get to areas that are chokepoints for armor and ambush them.

Infantry requires a lot of micromanagement due to the fact that they are weak and vulnerable to many TA strikes such as light/heavy artillery, napalm and chemical weapons. They are also victimized by support players using Medium/Heavy Artillery -- you can see an example of this in the Bridge Assault replay I posted.

The main thing to remember is to always stay mobile and hidden in forests and buildings. Groups of infantry shooting out of forests, buildings or moving out in the open is only asking to get creamed by TA strikes. Once you get the feel on how "long" the napalm strike or how large in diameter artillery and chemical strikes are, you can spread your infantry out to where you will only lose a group, instead of all of them at once.

The TA flow in SP was ridiculous and it is very different in MP. You are awarded TA for capturing points (5), attacking enemy units, fortifying friendly CPs, repairing friendly units and receiving it from other generous players. Ultimately, it is dependent on how smart (or lack there of) your enemy is. For example: there is a strategy called "TA Farming" that involves fortifying one of the CPs but allowing the others undefended; this will allow an enemy to capture the undefended one while they would have to blow up the bunkers on the other. The tactic behind this is that you kill the enemy on the undefended point and retake the CP, awarding you 5 TA. Rinse and repeat. Also, large amounts of vulnerable units such as light tanks and medium AA vehicles are prey to heavy choppers -- keep in mind that the more that the enemy kills, the more TA they get. 6 Light Tank kills will obviously give me more TA that if I killed 3 Heavy Tanks. If you prefer the support role and like repairing, you can get craploads of TA if you can keep your repair vehicles alive while shooting down aircraft -- good support players can pool vast amounts of TA.

Generally, getting 80 TA for a nuke is somewhat of a challenge individually in MP, but experienced players can take advantage of the enemy and farm TA from them, due to enemy army composition, the "CP TA Farming" tactic, etc; but by no means will you have an unlimited supply like you do in SP.

Also, Laser Guided Bombs are only good against blowing up bridges to delay an advance. There are other TA abilities that are more effective and anyone as Support playing Artillery or Air using Heavy Choppers can blow them up without wasting your TA.
